about

VINYL RE-ISSUE IS DUE IN OCTOBER 2023. Critics generally failed to spot the wit, irony and playful intelligence present in the music and imagery of Heavenly and the band from which they emerged, Talulah Gosh; apparently, bands fronted by women who refused to conform to accepted macho rock or pop cliches deserved only to be vilified and dismissed as twee, cute, trivial. But Heavenly didn't let themselves be bullied; some of the ideas of what would later become codified as riot grrrl had been present right from the days of Talulah Gosh, and when that movement spread across the Atlantic, Heavenly effortlessly incorporated its attitudes into their sound without ever losing sight of the humour and melodic gifts that had brought them this far. The title track of this EP – the songs on which were originally released as two separate 7"s a month apart – feels not only like the moment for which the band had been waiting, but is also maybe the best song to come out of the whole riot grrrl scene: "'Honey please come back I miss you' – 'Fuck you, no way!'" Elsewhere, P.U.N.K. Girl is joyfully celebratory and Hearts and Crosses as perfect a piece of effervescent pop as Heavenly ever created. Maybe most extraordinary, though, is closer So?; barely a minute long, the song is a devastating and chillingly real look, sung entirely a cappella by Amelia Fletcher, into the malignant heart of an abusive relationship.
